Unboxing the Motorola Devour By admin in Mobile Development

Yet another Motorola Android slider, the devour is what you might call a more modest version of the droid: 3.1 320 x 240 touch display, 3 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, and an optical trackpad. What sets the devour apart from the droid, however, is Motorolas custom user interface and service, and is the first (of likely many) to bring motoblur to Verizon.

Video: HTC Legend gets an early unboxing By External in Mobile Development News

Video: HTC Legend gets an early unboxing

by Greg Kumparak on March 5, 2010

Can’t get enough of the ultra gorgeous, uni-body HTC Legend? Neither can we. That’s why we’re glad (and a bit jealous) that our buddy Chris Davies over at SlashGear got his mitts all over a near-retail version of the device, and proceeded to give it a proper unboxing.

We say “near-retail” version because there seems to be a few things missing; while the device itself seems primped and polished, the box is missing any sort of graphical wrapping, and the microSD card that should ship with the device wasn’t included. Things might change a bit before the Legend hits retail in April — but if you’ve got a Legendary itch that needs to be scratched, the video after the jump ought to help.

Nexus One for Verizon takes one big step closer to reality, clears the FCC By External in Mobile Development News

Nexus One for Verizon takes one big step closer to reality, clears the FCC

by Greg Kumparak on February 26, 2010

Google has made it absolutely no secret that the Nexus One is heading to Verizon. They announced it the very same day they announced the T-Mobile version that’s already floating around, and have had it listed as “Coming Soon” ever since.

Alas, neither Google or Verizon is willing to spill the beans on when it’s coming. “Spring 2010!” they say, as if that satiates our desire for mundane details. But wait! There’s good news: the VZW Nexus One just took a huge step toward hitting retail.

Earlier today, a CDMA-friendly Nexus One (model PB99300, where the GSM version is PB99100) successfully fought its way through the FCC’s testing labs. Somewhere out there, there exists a fully functional, Verizon-compatible Nexus One, just waiting to be stuffed in a box and thrown on the shelves. FCC clearance isn’t a surefire indication that a launch is near, but we rarely ever see it more than a month or so before sales begin.

If the CDMA Nexus One launches any time soon, it ought to be Verizon’s first Android phone powered by a 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor. Excited? You should be.

Harrison’s Manual of Medicine on the Sprint Android Samsung Moment By admin in Mobile carriers

The Samsung Moment was officially released today, so I wanted to give a quick glimpse on how it handles this medical reference ebook. It’s still only running Android 1.5, but it has a faster processor over the HTC Hero, 800 mhz vs 528 Mhz. The biggest difference I notice is in how fast it switches between portrait and landscape mode. And, typing is much faster and more reliable with the physical keyboard. With the virtual keyboard on the Hero, you had to switch screens to type a number. With the Moment’s keyboard you can easily type numbers and letters. To use punctuation or symbols you do have to use a function key, but the backlight helps. This is not the full version of Harrison’s, so after I continue my evaluation I’ll have to see how useful this abridged version is.

Apple Looking to Bring iPhone OS to More Devices By External in Mobile Development News

Apple Looking to Bring iPhone OS to More Devices

A recent Apple Inc. job posting has revealed that the company intends to focus on bringing the iPhone OS onto new gadgets, devices and platforms.

The job posting from the Cupertino, CA, company specifically calls for an engineering manager to handle “platform bring-up.” In the job description, Apple states that it’s looking for a manager “to lead a team focused on bring-up of iPhone OS on new platforms.” It seems like Apple wants some outside talent with very strong technical experience, especially when it comes to bringing software onto multiple hardware devices. Computerworld first caught the job post.

Here are the first two paragraphs of the job posting, which explains exactly what the company is looking for:

“The Core Platform team within Apple’s Core OS organization is looking for a talented and inspired manager to lead a team focused on bring-up of iPhone OS on new platforms. The team is responsible for low level platform architecture, firmware, core drivers and bring-up of new hardware platforms. The team consists of talented engineers with experience in hardware, firmware, IOKit drivers, security and platform architecture.

This position requires a very technical and hands-on leader, experience in working closely with hardware team and a deep understanding of bare metal software. You must be a highly self-motivated individual who seeks to create a dynamic and creative team environment in which old problems are solved in new and innovative ways.”

The job requires someone with experience developing for the Unix operating system, experience with system-on-chip (SoC) level design and experience with “bring-up of mobile phones running Unix like operating systems.”

This job posting is very specific — not a lot of people are going to have this type of experience. We think it’s likely Apple is targeting product managers for Google Android, since it is built off of a modified version of the Linux kernel and it has experience porting Android onto multiple handsets.

What Is Apple’s Plan?

This job posting raises a lot of questions. Clearly Apple wants to expand the iPhone OS, but where exactly? Does it intend to create multiple phones running the iPhone OS? Could something like AppleTV or even the Mac or Macbook gain the iPhone OS interface? It’s tough to tell and probably too early to know as well.

Let’s think about each of these scenarios for a moment:

1. Apple stops just selling one iPhone, but creates multiple models to suit multiple tastes, possibly including a version with a keyboard. Apple would retain control over all of these models, but it would use them to compete with BlackBerry, Android and other smartphones even further. It could also create a less-advanced version for users that don’t want an advanced smartphone, but that would be out of character with Apple’s history.

We think there’s a chance it could create multiple models of the iPhone, but this is probably not the primary plan.

2. Apple brings the iPhone OS to AppleTV. It would certainly provide a boost and new attention to a mostly fledgling and forgotten project, but most TVs are not touchscreens. We’re not sure about this one.

3. Apple creates new computers that utilize the iPhone OS as its primary OS. We think this is actually the most likely scenario — it gives Apple full control over the user experience and gives it a chance to redefine computing for years to come. It seems like a next step from the iPad, although we’re uncertain how receptive people would be to a low-cost computer running the iPhone OS instead of the Mac OS or Windows.

Apple is clearly bullish on its OS and thinks it is the future of computing and mobile. Now it’s just a matter of what device it puts it in next.

New Google Mobile App adds Voice Search support for iPod By External in Mobile Development News

New Google Mobile App adds Voice Search support for iPod

by Robin Wauters on February 20, 2010

Google has submitted a new version of its Google Mobile App for the iPhone platform (iTunes link), and the fresh app now finally boasts built-in support for Voice Search on iPod touch devices (2G or newer).

Update: we have 3 commenters saying there still is no Voice Search on their iPod touch devices to be found, even after updating. We’re looking into it.

Version 0.4.5.3281 also brings improved stability when using Voice Search on ‘restrictive networks’ and is also said to make Search by Voice completion detection function a bit better.

Other than that, the update brings a number of bug fixes, one that fixes pasting into the search box and one that should prevent the app from crashing when you do a search for ‘@’.

In case you’re keeping count: Google Voice Search hit the iPhone mid-November 2008 and landed on Android at the beginning of February 2009.

Sony Ericsson announces Vivaz pro at Mobile World Congress By External in Mobile Development News

Sony Ericsson announces Vivaz pro at Mobile World Congress

by Marc Flores on February 14, 2010

While you love birds are busy being smitten on a lazy Valentine’s Sunday, Sony Ericsson is busy dishing out new goods from Barcelona, Spain. Mobile World Congress is sure to bring some interesting news in the mobile space this week, and SE is kicking things off with the pro version of the Vivaz.

What makes it “pro,” you ask?

Well, it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for starters.

Like the non-pro version, it will be running S60 5th edition on a 640 x 360 HVGA touch screen. The Vivaz pro has a 5.1 megapixel camera is 3 megapixels less than the Vivaz, but is still capable of recording 720p HD video. I’m just hoping that its video recording capabilities are as awesome as the 8.1 megapixel packing Vivaz, which totally blew us away here at MobileCrunch. We’re just happy that this is coming with North American 3G bands and it will be coming around some time in the late second quarter. Hold your breath, here’s the full press release:

The HTC Scorpion may pack 1.5Ghz processor, Android v2.2, and WiMax By External in Mobile Development News

The HTC Scorpion may pack 1.5Ghz processor, Android v2.2, and WiMax – if it exists

by Greg Kumparak on February 9, 2010

HTC cranks out Android handsets like candy corn – and we love that. The only downside to this, however, is that each new leak has us drooling before the last leak even has time to become a real product.

Our salivary glands were just warming up for the HTC Incredible and the HTC Legend, but now we’ve got the HTC Scorpion (possibly codenamed “Olympian”) to dream about. According to the very-latest of leaks, this thing might pack a scorchingly fast 1.5 Ghz processor and the as-of-yet unreleased Android v2.2.

The emphasis in that last sentence, though, should be placed on “might”. We’re by no means 100% convinced this thing exists. Someone hooked the guys over at AndroidSpin up with what is reportedly a build file from this “Scorpion” device. The catch here, is that this leak is purely text – no images, no video, and thus, nothing tough to fake.

We’ve dumped the full text of the build file below, but here’s what caught our eye:

  • ro.product.board=cortex1.5ghz: Here’s the mention of the 1.5Ghz chip. Qualcomm just announced that they’d be making a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon chipset last month, and they’re not expected to hit devices for months – but if anyone had an engineering sample or two, it’d be HTC.
  • ro.product.model=HTC Olympian and ro.product.name=htc_scorpion: The names believed to be the internal codename and the tentative sales name.
  • wimax.interface = tiwlan0: WiMax!
  • ro.build.id=FRE65C: Google names their builds after sweets, alphabetically. The Nexus One has the latest build, “Eclair”, with a build ID of “ERE27″. The next build is codenamed “Froyo”.

Find any other gems hidden below? Let us know.

Motorola Droid gets multitouch, but only in Google Maps for now By External in Mobile Development News

Motorola Droid gets multitouch, but only in Google Maps for now

by Greg Kumparak on February 5, 2010

When Nexus One owners were suddenly blessed with multi-touch support on their handsets, we saw the same comment posted just about everywhere we looked: “Great! Now when will the Droid get it?”

The answer, it seems, is today.

Just a few hours ago, reports started coming in that an update for Google Maps had just found its way to the Droid Market. It bumps the version number up to 3.4, which just so happens to be the same version that got sent out to Nexus Ones – and sure enough, pinch-to-zoom multitouch gestures are in place.

Alas, Maps stands alone when it comes to new-found multitouch support. At the moment, the multi-touch enabled Browser and Gallery apps now found on the Nexus One have yet to make their way down the pipes.
