New Google Mobile App adds Voice Search support for iPod By External in Mobile Development News

New Google Mobile App adds Voice Search support for iPod

by Robin Wauters on February 20, 2010

Google has submitted a new version of its Google Mobile App for the iPhone platform (iTunes link), and the fresh app now finally boasts built-in support for Voice Search on iPod touch devices (2G or newer).

Update: we have 3 commenters saying there still is no Voice Search on their iPod touch devices to be found, even after updating. We’re looking into it.

Version 0.4.5.3281 also brings improved stability when using Voice Search on ‘restrictive networks’ and is also said to make Search by Voice completion detection function a bit better.

Other than that, the update brings a number of bug fixes, one that fixes pasting into the search box and one that should prevent the app from crashing when you do a search for ‘@’.

In case you’re keeping count: Google Voice Search hit the iPhone mid-November 2008 and landed on Android at the beginning of February 2009.

Review: Crush the Castle for iPhone/iPod Touch By External in Mobile Games

Review: Crush the Castle for iPhone/iPod Touch

by John Biggs on January 29, 2010

Every so often you find a game so addicting that you can’t stop playing it. I’m that way with two games on the iPhone: Fieldrunners and Civ Revolution. Close runners up are iShoot (there are only so many times you can launch nukes) and now Crush the Castle.

Designed by Armor Games, CtC was originally a Flash game ported to the iPhone.

To play you load up a trebuchet with weapons (rocks, firebombs, whatever else) by tapping once. You tap again launch and then tap to release at some point in the arc. The items swing out into space and land at some point on a castle that is essentially made of beams. The beams react in a naturalistic way meaning they move as if they were real beams and you then crush little people underneath them. Rinse. Repeat.

It’s quite addictive and you add new weapons and “lands” throughout the game. If you get medals – meaning you beat the level in less than a certain number of sticks – you can unlock new continents. The best part, I think, are the realistic crashes. The little characters don’t really squash – they kind of just fall over – but the interaction of the parts allows different parts to fall down when hit. Later levels introduce challenges like fire.

You can play the game right here or you can download a free demo version here or a $1.99 full version here.

The folks at Armor Games want five of you the chance to try it out. I’ll pick five commenters at random to receive a promo code. Otherwise, get a copy of the free version and give it a go. It’s pretty fun.

Inexpensively insure your phone or laptop… By admin in Misc.

With phones and laptops ranging in the hundreds to thousands of dollars it turns out you can insure them for cheaper then you may think. I was quite surprised to find just how affordable it is… Check out the information below provided by: Worth Ave Group

For example, let’s look at an iPhone:

$55 for 8GB
$63 for 16GB
$69 for 16GB 3GS
$79 for 32GB 3GS

There is a 50 dollar deductible

The insurance covers theft and accidental damage including liquid damage. Interestingly it doesn’t need to even be a new iPhone. According to others there is no waiting period in filing a claim.

Let’s look at laptop coverage:

As little as 21 dollars for a netbook and you can get 1500 dollars in laptop coverage for as little as 44 dollars with deductibles as low as 0 dollars up to 100 dollars. Coverage includes accidental damage including liquid damage, as well as theft. As well, if you purchase WorthTrack laptop tracking for 9.95 your laptop deductible is waived if the device is stolen.

If you do purchase the laptop coverage you can also add:

cell phone (non iphone) for $10.00
ipod/mp3 player/calculator/pda for $5.00
iPod touch $10.00
game systems $5.00
digital cameras $5.00

You can find out more by clicking the links below:

I did a little research and the Worth Ave Group rates seem very competitive. As well, the additional insurance option for other items available with the laptop coverage is definitely a great deal. Go check them out!

Will Next Week’s Apple Event Finally Bring Background Apps To The iPhone? By External in Mobile Development News

Will Next Week’s Apple Event Finally Bring Background Apps To The iPhone?

by Jason Kincaid on January 19, 2010

This morning, after many months of rampant speculation over the enigmatic Tablet, Apple officially invited scores of press to a special media event to be held January 27. The debut of the Tablet seems all but a given according to most reports, but there are some secondary announcements that also stand to be huge — especially the rumors that we may also see the launch of iPhone 4.0. This afternoon, Fox News “confirmed” that we’d being seeing the latest iteration of Apple’s hugely popular mobile OS for the first time. Should that be the case, there’s also a good chance we’ll see launch of a very important new feature: background applications.

First things first. While the title of the Fox News article is “Apple Tablet, iPhone 4 Launch Confirmed for January 27″, the body of the article later says that it’s “likely” that Apple will unveil those two products (along with an updated iLife suite), and also notes that Apple is known for suddenly removing features or products from their announcements at the last second — none of which makes the news sound totally concrete. That said, there are plenty of reasons why iPhone 4.0 could be making an appearance alongside the Tablet, and why it will bring background apps with it.

We’ve discussed the probable connection between the Tablet and the iPhone OS since as early as last May. With iPhone OS, Apple took Mac OS X and stripped it down to the basics to turn it into a compact and powerful mobile operating system. The tablet will almost certainly have more horsepower than the iPhone, but it would still stand to gain from the power and space saving attributes of the mobile OS (albeit a modified version). Our suspicions got further support less than a week ago, when we saw reports that the newest releases of the iPhone OS was actually being held back because some of its code alluded to the unannounced tablet device. Given these ties, it would be logical for the iPhone 4.0 OS to make its debut alongside the tablet.

But the Tablet OS will need to bring some new features with it. For one, it will probably need to allow users to run multiple apps at the same time. Most people don’t particularly care (yet) that they can’t do this with their iPhones, because the screen real estate is so limited and they don’t view the device as a handheld computer (even though it is one). But that won’t be true with the tablet — in light of its larger screen, users will expect more functionality, and the inability to run multiple apps would grow frustrating quickly. With that in mind, if Apple has already established a paradigm for running background apps on the tablet, it would make sense to finally bring it over to the iPhone too.

The iPhone’s current lack of background applications is one of its most glaring weaknesses compared to other mobile operating systems, most notably Android and Palm’s WebOS. Apple’s reasons for withholding the functionality before now were obvious: running multiple applications can drain the device’s already-strained battery more quickly, and forcing users to manage which apps are open adds an extra layer of complexity. It was the right choice then, but it’s time for things to change.

Plenty of developers have already had their applications hampered by their inability to run in the background. Messaging clients have to rely on the iPhone’s Push notifications, which can only display a single alert at a time. Music players (other than the built-in iPod app) close down as soon as you try to do anything else on the phone. And location based apps have to rely almost exclusively on the “check-in” model popularized by Foursquare, because they have no way to passively monitor your location. Consumers may not be frustrated by these restrictions yet, but it’s only a matter of time before they look enviously at their Android-toting friends streaming Pandora and running Skype or Meebo in the background.

And Apple knows it. As far back as last May we were hearing that Apple was having serious discussions about how to implement background applications.  As it did with copy and paste (which iPhone users had to wait years for), Apple is clearly taking its time to get it right the first time.  Now, with the imminent release of the tablet, Apple may have finally settled on a solution.  If the Fox News report is correct, that could be revealed as soon as next week. But even if iPhone 4.0 isn’t announced for a few more months, it seems highly likely that background apps will come with it.

Google Android Rivaling Apple? By admin in Mobile Development News

Google’s revolutionary Android platform for Smartphone devices has been a hit from the start, however it has a long way to go in order to surpass the popularity of the iPhone. Still, good news is continually being released in Android’s favor, the latest coming earlier this week when mobile advertising company AdMob released data and metrics showing a significant increase in Droid-powered devices, specifically from the newly released Motorola Droid.

AdMob’s stats detail the number of requests – such as data or phone calls – made from any Android device. These numbers increased by 97 percent from October to December, with more than 1 billion requests made in December alone. The Motorola Droid is actually a latecomer to the Android scene – the HTC’s Magic, Dream and Hero models have all been on the market for a while – but the Motorola Droid has really helped the entire Android market to stand out. Despite hefty competition, including the newly released Nexus One from Google, the Motorola Droid has been well received. Only two months after it’s release, the Droid (the phone itself) has become the top-selling device running the Android platform throughout all cell phone providers.

Android vs. iPhone debates will continue to go on as long as both are in existence, though each has its superior features. Android has a physical keyboard, while the iPhone has talk and surf capabilities. One of the biggest myths about the Android relates to multi-touch features (the ability for the screen to read multiple inputs at once). Though the Google Maps feature does not support “pinch zoom” like Apple products do, it does indeed have multi-touch capabilities. Surprisingly, the Nexus One does not have multi-touch functionality.

In technology, we often see things downsized – CD players replaced by iPods, and desktop computers replaced by laptops or netbooks. It’s unusual, however, to see things get bigger, but that’s exactly what is happening with Android platform. Many PC companies are looking into taking the cell phone platform and upgrading it to be the primary platform for their netbook products. GigaOm’s Stacey Higgenbothom wrote about this in November, saying “Widespread adoption of Android could lead it to become what Windows was for the PC world, an operating system that can be licensed on any underlying hardware and ensure that a variety of applications run on the machines. There will be room for other players in this multibillion-dollar device market, of course, but for the most part, the computer makers have already settled on Android.”

This week’s release of the Nexus One was a breakthrough for the wireless industry — the first phone to be sold unlocked, and not limited to a single carrier. This too is where Android devices are headed…
