PositionApp Helps Developers Track App Store Performance On The Go By External in Mobile Development News

PositionApp Helps Developers Track App Store Performance On The Go

Today, UK design firm ustwo has launched PositionApp, an iPhone application that provides data regarding the top 300 apps in the App Store from the last 6 months. The price of the app would have been $7, but AdMob (well, Google technically) is sponsoring the app so that it is free for the next two months.

Coupled with its launch, ustwo also provided MobileCrunch with some exclusive graphs showing which app categories have been most popular over the last 6 months. Unlike most App Store data, this data comes directly from scraping iTunes, which means that it is a 100% accurate assessment of the App Store. Anyone interested in the App Store should hit the jump and check out what PositionApp has found.

PositionApp is a simple application: ustwo crawls the App Store on an hourly basis and collects data from the top 300 apps across all categories and geographies. They’ve been doing this for 6 months and have now launched an application which enables you to see, in graphs and numbers, what apps have been successful for the last 6 months and what rankings they’ve held. The user interface is slick, but I found that I actually wanted even more data than this app had.

The app is kept up-to-date in real-time so PositionApp will provide you with the ability to check how your app is doing (should it be in the top 300) compared to others. Of course, it is a niche application and likely won’t ever be in the top 300 itself (ironic, isn’t it?), but developers will find it as a good on-the-go resource to tracking App Store successes and failures — or more accurately, successes and near successes.

PositionApp comes with more in-depth features such as country-by-country tracking so you can see how your favorite apps do in different markets. It also lets you see who the biggest movers are, which is a good way to get ahead on

The data that ustwo has been scraping also provides additional insights into the App Store. They put together some graphs to show MobileCrunch readers what app categories are the most popular, both free and paid. The graphs (shown below) show clearly that the App Store is dominated by games (over 50% in paid and 40% in free). Next up is Entertainment applications, followed by Utilities.

After that, it gets dicey. On the free side, Lifestyle and Music applications are clearly doing well (each with about 5% of the top 300). However, there is no clear winning category on the paid side after games, Entertainment and Utilities.

Perhaps equally as interesting are the categories doing the worst. Sports, Navigation, News and Travel are all doing fairly poorly among other paid categories. In free, Weather and Finance can be added to that list as well.

It’s important to remember that many apps go into the top 300 simply because of low price points (Games) and that high-priced applications don’t tend to get enough sales to make it to the top 300 (Navigation). That said, the numbers are surely interesting.

You can download PositionApp on iTunes here.

Google Nexus One gets OTA update, multi-touch goodness By External in Mobile Development News

Google Nexus One gets OTA update, multi-touch goodness

by Marc Flores on February 2, 2010

When Google announced the Nexus One at an event early last month, one journalist asked, “Why doesn’t this have multi-touch? When is it going to get multi-touch?” Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering at Google, said, “It’s something we’re looking into. It’s just a software thing right now.” Well, today our prayers have been answered via an over-the-air update for the Nexus One. It also has some critical updates and fixes, too.

One of the more painful issues has been the spotty 3G service on the Nexus One. While Google said it was a T-Mobile network problem, some users remained unconvinced. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s included in this update:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:

  • Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com – access your favorite places from your phone or computer
  • Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history – makes it easy to search for places you’ve searched for before
  • Night mode in Google Maps Navigation – automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving
Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications
3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones
When you get the update notification, all you have to do is download it and your phone will do all the rest. Like many OTA updates on such a huge scale, these will be staggered so you can expect yours some time before the end of the week.

WordPress publishes native Android application By admin in Mobile Development News

We just learned that Automattic has released a native WordPress client for Android. Like Android, the app is an open source project and anyone can add contributions. The app looks quite similar to the unofficial wpToGo and we think that dev was probably involved in this project. A full review will come later, but we wanted to let everyone know the app is now available in the Android Market. If you have a blog powered by WordPress, give it a go and let us know what you think.

Update: Dan Roundhill, the dev of wpToGo, is behind this project. His app wpToGo will be discontinued as all development efforts move forward with the Open Source WordPress for Android app.

WordPress is our preferred blogging platform and has powered this site for the last year. For a taste of what WordPress can do, check out our new mobile site.

From WordPress: We’re pleased to announce that WordPress for Android is now available in the Android Market. The initial release has focused on giving you the ability to manage your blog while on the go.

Features Include:

  • Configure and manage multiple blogs
  • Comment moderation including the ability to reply to comments
  • Create and Edit Posts including categories, tags and photos
  • Create and Edit Pages
  • Get notified of new comments in the Android notification bar

Get Involved:

Motorola SHOP4APPS now official…in China By admin in Mobile Development News

We came across Motorola’s SHOP4APPS last month, which was quickly taken down after we found it. I heard rumors that Motorola’s Android application store would launch with the Droid, but that didn’t happen and we began to wonder if the project had been pulled.

Today Motorola finally announced SHOP4APPS which will be included on several Android phones headed to China Telecom and China Unicom. The actual storefront was not revealed, but you can see our preview for a sample of what to expect.

Developers can begin immediately to submit their Android applications for inclusion into the SHOP4APPS store in China at http://developer.motorola.com

No details were provided about a possible United States launch, but we have a strong feeling it will happen eventually. My guess is Google persuaded Motorola to leave it off the Droid at launch, but there should be no reason for them to prevent it now. We like the key features of SHOP4APPS like application discovery and think U.S. customers will enjoy them as well.

Some of the key features within SHOP4APPS include:

  • Discover apps tailored for you. SHOP4APPS can be easily tailored to present the user with applications that will be most meaningful for them based on their existing preferences, region and carrier.
  • Download or Purchase Once.  Keep It Forever. Purchased apps get stored in your personal storage area called “My Locker,” making switching handsets or restoring applications seamless and easy.
  • Promote your Innovation. For developers, SHOP4APPS is an easy and effective way to showcase, sell and distribute their applications for Android-based devices in China. SHOP4APPS offers developers an innovative set of resources, starting with tools for testing their applications, as well as marketing and promotional tools for marketing their applications to the end-user.

What do you guys think? Do we need another app store?
