Android at its Best with the Acer Liquid A1 By admin in Mobile Development News

Tawain’s computer maker Acer has released its new line of “Liquid” smartphones at a most opportune time.  With the Snapdragon HTC HD2 coming out later this year and the Sony XPERIA X10 hitting the markets first quarter of the next year, the new Acer Liquid A1 comes out pretty much bagging a couple of firsts. It’s the world’s first Snapdragon Android smartphone and the world’s first Android smartphone in the wide –VGA screen resolution.

Android fans may be a bit disappointed that Acer has underclocked the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon from 1GHz to 768 MHz.  That’s like getting a Ferrari to run only at 80 mph max. But it doesn’t look like this has compromised any of the remarkable features of the Liquid handset. It still packs a winning combination of innovative cutting-edge features and stylish 21st century ergonomics.

Another disappointment comes from Acer’s use of the older Android 1.6 when the latest and more powerful Android 2.0 is already out months before its release. But we can surmise that any shift could have delayed the Liquid’s launch date.  We only hope that Acer provides an upgrade option to prospective users of the Liquid smartphone.

Value for the Money

The handset has been available for pre-order on the Clove site in the UK.  It was initially promoted at a very affordable price of €380 ($570) before taxes and subsidies.  But it can now be had for slightly lower at the ?330 ($540) price point.  This is a landmark price for an upscale Android phone.  Firstly it’s a quad band GSM and tri-band 3G with HSUPA/HSDPA for high speed internet surfing. Whereas pother smartphones can only allow data synching between your handset and your laptop or desktop PC, the Liquid can also synchronized over WiFi 802.11 b/g apart from its hotspot surfing support.

Multimedia functionality gets upscale treatment starting with its expansive 3.5” TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen in Wide-VGA resolution. Movie watching on the road rarely gets this satisfying.  Then there’s a 5 megapixel camera with software-assisted accelerated autofocus, VGA video recording and geo-tagging from its built-in GPS receiver.  You also get A2DP support for wireless stereo Bluetooth earphones in addition to a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired headphones.

Your media content benefits from its 256MB ROM and a 512MB RAM with microSD support for up to 32 GB. Its slim 1350 mAh lithium-ion battery delivers 5 hours of talk time and 400 hours of standby time on a single charge – a bit on the short side.  It looks like Acer engineers may have underclocked the Snapdragon to be able to get the most of its slim underpowered battery which is the bane of most slim handsets.

Software wise, the Acer Liquid A1 has a full complement of phone apps that allow seamless integration with online social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Picasa and Flickr. You can now have updates and sync of your phonebook and calendar event with these social media and make use of Picasa and YouTube as a remote back-up site for all your media-rich files.   It has what Acer uniquely calls Spinlets, or apps that allow free audio and video streaming on your handsets that you can share with friends and colleague over the web and email.

For its price tag, it looks like Acer has hit on a winner with it Liquid smartphone.  We hope to see this widely available from network carriers soon.

Sony Ericsson’s First Android Phone – myluxphone By admin in Mobile Development News

Sony Ericsson is landing a lot of firsts this year.  It launched its first Windows Mobile handset in the Xperia X1 and its first Symbian with the Satio in the last quarter of the year.  While still under wraps, the long speculated and anticipated mobile phone Rachel gets unofficial release online as the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 – Sony’s first Android smartphone and the world’s second Android Snapdragon after Acer’s Liquid A1.

Expect this to hit the market in January 2010 giving Sony Ericsson Replicaa great head start in the New Year.  There’s still no pricing information at this time, but that should come once the official announcement kicks in. But as all Android phones go and considering its premium features on the most powerful handset on earth, expect this to come at a bank-breaking price.

Fashion Sense in a Flagship Phone

Who says flagship handsets are bulky and monstrous.  That may be typical in other handset makes, but not for Sony Ericsson Mobile Phone.  At least not anymore as Sony used to make those bulky P-series handsets in its flagship line.  The new Xperia sports a stylishly slim black body that exudes the same disarming charm of a trendy high fashion handset but without the makeover from a Prada or Armani fashion house.

What stands out is its expansive 4” capacitive touchscreen with wide-VGA resolution and 16 million colors rivaled only by a few similarly fashionable flagship handsets that recently got launched.  They are the LG BL40 Chocolate and the Acer Liquid A1.

It’s exceeded only by the HTC HD2 but only on the screen size.  The Xperia X3 trumps them all with an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with 8x digital zoom and LED flash with support for full VGA recording at a cinema-grade 30 frames per second.

As can be gleaned from unofficial product specification leaks on the net, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 is your basic quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a twin and YMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA on the 3G network for blazing fast internet surfing and downloading. It runs on the Qualcomm QSC8250 Snapdragon CPU and its Android 1.6 Donut OS carries the Rachel user interface said to provide a smoother and more intuitive feel on the handset.

It sports the same Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and WiFi 802.11b/g that other flagships have, though the WiFi could be the more advanced 802.11n. There’s the usual high end media players, a stereo FM radio, Bluetooth A2DP for wireless headsets and a 3.5mm headphone jack that round off its multimedia feature set.

Video calls on 3G are supported by a front0facing secondary camera.  There’s an average 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM of internal memory which can also be expanded up to 32GB form its microSD slot.

X3 or X10

As always, speculation is always rife where there are no official data to base on.  The new Replica Sony Ericsson Phone Android handset was first leaked on the net under the code name Rachel.  Sony itself may have leaked out that Rachel will be commercially released as the X3.  Now, the net gets another leak that it will be the X10 when it gets officially announced later.  But no matter, the market knows what handset these various designations are referring to, and the anticipation gets fever pitched every day for the latest SE Android flagship on the most powerful handset.

Microsoft and Firefox engineering a Chrome web OS rival? By admin in Internet Development

In July, Google Inc. had announced that it was working on an operating system for netbooks called Chrome operating system (OS) and it is reported that it is set to have a publicly available “stable release” by the second half of 2010. The new browser based operating system can be a competitive product for the software giant, Microsoft Corp, who needs to respond.

Recently, the company has demonstrated an early version of Chrome OS that features tabs for frequently used web-based apps and a 7 second boot up time. Further, Google has released the source code under open source licensing as Chromium OS. Now, various analysts suggest that the new Chrome OS will start a race to develop browser based operating systems like Internet Explorer OS, Firefox OS or even Opera OS.

Google Chrome Operating System

The company has stated that the Google Chrome Operating System project will be an open source by the end of 2009. Although, it is based on the Linux kernel, it will use “a new windowing system”. The Chrome Operating System is being targeted at users who spend most of their time on the Internet and is designed to run on computers ranging from netbooks to desktop computers.

Chrome Operating System concept

Various developers said that the concept behind browser based operating is simple, use enough Linux under the browser to run on modest hardware and you have a hit formula for the success. It is assumed that if Google can develop its Chrome OS in about two years, Microsoft, Firefox, etc, would be able to develop their own “browser based operating system” at the time when Google’s version arrives next year.

It seems that there are various customers for Chrome OS out in the market, which include Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Lenovo and Asus. Therefore, Microsoft, needs to respond, who holds the world’s operating system market with more than 90 percent share. Further, Firefox and Opera could also release their versions to retain their future market share and stand with the competition.

It is assumed that such browser based OS would support its parent’s own web-based productivity applications, but Firefox could be a spoiler as Microsoft and Google will head in proprietary directions. Developers said that if these browser based OSs have similar specifications like Google than users can have interchangeable operating systems in future, which can be carried on memory cards.

Mr. Sundar Pichai, Google’s VP of Product Management said that if any other browser maker wants to build their own version of the OS using their own browser, they can. It is assumed that Chrome OS is going to make computers cheaper. Analysts predict that there can be a drop of $100 per PC. Since the operating system will not involve any licensing fees and up gradation charges.

Conclusion

In spite of recent breakdown in Google services, the company has convinced people that their data is safe in the cloud, as their personal information is already up there. However, the company has not detailed that what apps can be run on the operating system. Can we run Photoshop on it and what are the applications changes to make Chrome OS a better choice than Windows? But we can say that only for self-defense, Redmond giant needs an alternative to Chrome OS to offer its customers.

Top 5 Smartphone development of 2009 By admin in Mobile Development News

As smartphones further paved their place in the enterprises, Apple, RIM Blackberry, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Google Android are eying for the spotlight. In the last quarter, Gartner said that Smartphone sales had surpassed 41 million units, a 12.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Today, Smartphones have become a compulsory gadget for corporate users. They are not only revolutionizing the mobile handset market, but also changing the way we use PCs. The reason behind the success of the Smartphones is increased interest in social networking with Facebook and Twitter, which demand high speed internet and connectivity features.

In 2009, all the major mobile vendors update its range to increase their revenue and market share. Here, the feature discusses the biggest stories in the Smartphone industry.

1.    Google Android platform and Google Phone

Google Android is an open source mobile operating system running on the Linux kernel launched back in 2007. The platform targets mobile devices in large, but now it seems that various PC vendors are working on Android based netbooks and tablets. Recently, it is reported that the Android OS claimed 27% share in the market, whereas iPhone OS reported 55% share in the Smartphone market in US for November month.

Various Smartphones based on the platform is already available in the market like HTC G1, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy, GW620 Eve, etc. Meanwhile, Google has been working on Android based Smartphone, called “Nexus One”, which will be available in January and will pose challenge Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry.

The new Smartphone is more evolutionary up gradation than the revolutionary improvement to the hardware. The new iPhone 3GS has a number of new features which will certainly impress the corporate world like hardware encryption and support for ActiveSync policies. The Acer Liquid A1 – Towering Above Android Phones By admin in Mobile Development News

Taiwan-based computer-now-mobile phone-maker Acer seemed so confident about the performance of its first Android smartphone that it didn’t mind underclocking the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon processor from 1GHz to just 768 MHz.

It may have disappointed Android fans but its new Acer Liquid A1 is every inch one of the most powerful Android smartphones short of the Motorola Droid that has fashionable pretensions that work. Stability or even squeezing out the battery performance on so thin a handset may have prompted Acer to do just that, we can only guess.

But to see and use is to believe.  It is now out in the market and its features just confirm the leaked technical data we’ve seen over the last few months.  It is a formidable smartphone that despite all its remarkable goodies comes with a very appealing price initially published at €380 ($570) before taxes and subsidies.  But it now hovers slightly lower than that in the ?330 ($540) price point.

Top Act Features

As the world first Snapdragon Android smartphone and the world’s first Android 1.6 in wide-VGA (800×480) high definition screen, the Liquid ‘s 3.5” capacitive touchscreen figure quite dominantly on its futuristic slim body just 12.5mm thick and weighing just 135g.

There are no protruding tactile keys on the face as all navigating buttons are touch sensitive flushed contiguously level with the screen.  The handset exudes elegant simplicity in its fluid form and comes in three colors of your choice: black red and white.

This is a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G and a tri-band 3G/UMTS with HSDPA data connectivity for up to 7.2 Mbps assuring a high speed internet browsing experience. Local data connectivity is supported by its WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot internet surfing as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR for wireless data transfers and synchronization with Bluetooth devices. Acer takes these features a step further allowing you to synchronize select desktop or laptop media contents with the handset over both WiFi and Bluetooth.

Talk about synchronization, the Liquid can have your address book contacts, calendar and email contents synced with social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.  You can also upload your photos to Picasa and your videos to YouTube.  This makes Google’s online media services act as a virtual remote storage backup for any and all your media content.

You can expect excellent imaging feature with a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and geo-tagging courtesy of its built-in GPS receiver. On top of its capable multimedia players, the Liquid A1 comes with what Acer calls Spinlets, special phone apps that enable free audio and video content streaming that you can share with friends, family and colleagues over the web or email.

You get two choices in listening to your audio files.  You can use wireless stereo earphones with its Bluetooth 2.1 A2DP support or use regular high fidelity headphones using its 3.5mm AV jack.

Some Complaints

Its slim 1350 lithium-ion battery when fully charged can only go to 5 hours of talk time and about 17 days in standby mode – a bit short compared with other touchscreen smartphones in this class.  We figure if Acer hadn’t underclocked the Snapdragon CPU, there’d be shorter talk times. The Acer Liquid A1 runs on the Android 1,6 Donut platform but we hope to see it upgraded to the latest version 2.0 codenamed Éclair that now runs the Motorola Droid.
