Unboxing the Motorola Devour By admin in Mobile Development

Yet another Motorola Android slider, the devour is what you might call a more modest version of the droid: 3.1 320 x 240 touch display, 3 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, and an optical trackpad. What sets the devour apart from the droid, however, is Motorolas custom user interface and service, and is the first (of likely many) to bring motoblur to Verizon.

AT&T launches 2 new 3G dongles – One with GPS, both with 7.2mbps HSPA By External in Mobile Development News

AT&T launches 2 new 3G dongles – One with GPS, both with 7.2mbps HSPA

by Greg Kumparak on March 4, 2010

Good news, road warriors! AT&T has just churned out a pair of brand spankin’ new 7.2 megabit per second 3G dongles, just for you.

The first one up is the LG Turbo, a fairly standard fare; its got the aforementioned 7.2 HSPA, a microUSB slot for adding a bit of extra purpose to it. It’ll set you back $99 bucks on a 2 year data contract, but you’ll get $99 bucks back after mail-in rebate.

The second offering, the Option Velocity, has a bit of extra fun in its pockets: GPS. Do you need a GPS chip packed into your 3G dongle? Probably not. But you can get it! It’s a pretty cool option for road-trippers who want a really precise idea of where they are at any given time, plus a way for folks out there running carputers in their dash to slim things down a bit. The Velocity will cost $129.99 out the door, but a mail-in rebate knocks the long term price down to $29.99.

Both units should hit the AT&T retail stores on March 7th.

Verizon spent $1.3 million dollars each day to improve 3G in California last year By External in Mobile Development News

Verizon spent $1.3 million dollars each day to improve 3G in California last year

by Greg Kumparak on February 10, 2010

This is Verizon’s 3G coverage map. See those little white spots amongst the green? More specifically, the ones in California? Those are the spots where Verizon’s 3G coverage is completely absent or mostly lacking. And, well, Verizon hates them – so much, in fact, that they’ve been spending millions of dollars every day to get rid of them.

According to Verizon themselves, the company pumped roughly $485 million into their data network in California in 2009. That works out to a bit over $1.3 million each and every day. All-in-all, the company has spent $5.7 billion in California, and $55 billion nationally since they launched in June of 2000.

So where’s that money going? New cell towers, primarily, followed by capacity improvements to towers that are already in place.

Get a glimpse of a physical HTC Legend By admin in Mobile Development News

Some renders of the HTC Legend have been floating around for awhile, but now the folks over at Engadget have some actual photos. See for yourself – the device looks about as expected with no new details beside these photos.

The aluminum casing is looking pretty nice, and I know it’s a small detail, but what looks to be the speaker has a nice dot pattern. We’ll keep a lookout for any more sightings.

Android-powered Dell Mini 5 approved for AT&T 3G By admin in Mobile Development News

Would you buy a phone with a 5 inch screen? Some say bigger is better, but what crosses the line for a mobile display?
Dell is set to push the limit with their new Android-powered Mini 5. Some call it a mobile internet device or a mini tablet, but it appears Dell will refer to it as a phone.
AT&T told us they would launch five Android phones in the first half of the year, including one from Dell. Engadget has spotted the Dell Mini 5 on FCC’s site with support for AT&T 3G.
Michael Dell said the Mini 5 would be launching in the United States in the next couple of months so look for an official announcement soon.
Rumored specs of the Mini 5 include:

5-inch 800×480 touchscreen
1 GHz Snapdragon processor
5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and front facing camera
WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G support
1530mAh battery
Android 1. 6

How much would you be willing to drop on this big boy? 500? 600? 700?

Nexus One slated to arrive in AT&T By External in Mobile Development News

Nexus One slated to arrive in AT&T 3G flavor

by Marc Flores on February 1, 2010

When the Google Nexus One was announced early last month, Android fans went giddy with excitement, especially since there is an option to buy it unlocked. The only downside was that if you wanted 3G service, you were limited to T-Mobile’s decent, but smaller network. AT&T users are still out of luck and limited to EDGE speeds on the handset, but according to documents filed at the FCC, the Nexus One will support the 3G bands used in North America. That means AT&T, Rogers, Bell and Telus customers can enjoy the Nexus One in all its glory (whenever the Canadians manage to get their hands on the device).

If you’re at the point where you’re about to break down and accept suffering with EDGE, hold out just a little longer. We all knew it would be inevitable, but a Nexus One with WCDMA I, II and V (2100, 1900 and 850 respectively) should be coming sooner than later.

Verizon breaks out lower-priced unlimited voice plans, keeps smartphone plans the same By External in Mobile Development News

Verizon breaks out lower-priced unlimited voice plans, keeps smartphone plans the same

by Matt Burns on January 15, 2010

35987dc2484

Good ol’ VZW just released details about its new unlimited plans and AT&T should probably take notes. The voice-only plan dropped from $99 to only $69 and the voice/text plans is now only $89 instead of $119. The same plans are available on a pre-paid basis for only $5 more per month. The new, lower-priced plans are available today, and just like all of Verizon’s services, current customers can switch to these plans even if they are under contract with another rate plan.

Data packages were also revised, but not nearly as much. The $9.99 for 25MB data package is now available for all VZW 3G multimedia phones. Previously, this plan was only available with select featurephones, but not anymore. Now anyone but smartphone users can opt for that package.

Speaking of smartphones, Verizon didn’t touch the $29.99 per month plan. It’s still the same and probably not going to drop anytime soon. That’s going to be Verizon’s bread and butter as the carrier launches more and more Android and Blackberry devices.

The New Samsung Spica i5700 By Hans Erickson in Mobile Development, Mobile Development News

Samsung has announced the newest member to the Android family this past weekend.  Introducing the Spica i5700:

samsung-galaxy-spica

The Spica sports a zippy 800MHz CPU,  has a 3.2-inch HVGA (320 x 480 pixel) TFT display, a 3MP camera, and 180Mb of internal memory with microSDHC card slot for up to 32Gb of storage.

Utilizing version 1.5 of the Android OS (Cupcake), the Spica will support DivX for video playback, an exciting addition given that others must convert files to a playable format for their phone.

The Galaxy Spica is already available in Europe and Russia, and is expected to launch in Africa and the Middle East soon.  Notably absent is the US.  The lack of North American 3G bands would seem to indicate that Samsung doesn’t intend on releasing the Spica in the US.  Releasing a phone in our dominantly 3G world with only support for the slower EDGE and GSM would be a pretty daft move.  Either way, from the video below, the Spica looks to be a nice addition to the ever growing Android family:

Japan’s Growing Mobile Landscape By Hans Erickson in Case Study, Mobile Development, Mobile Development News

I’ve gotten done reading some really great slides from Morgan Stanley’s MS Economy Internet Trends.  I’ll dip into them for some future posts, but the ones I found really interesting were on Japan.  I believe that even if the west doesn’t follow the exact same trajectory, Japan’s mobile trends at least provide a broad estimate as to where mobile is headed in the US and Europe.

I think it’s safe to say that as far as Japan’s mobile landscape and economy is concerned, they are ahead of the rest of the world.  They have robust data networks, have wider smartphone usage, and continue to see some amazing growth and uptake.  So with this in mind take a look at Japan’s mobile internet revenue mix:

Picture 7

This is over eight years, I know, I know, a lot happened in those eight years, but revenue grew more than 500%!  And as the chart points out, when you look at the percentage make up of the various categories, the rest of the world in 2008 looks remarkably like Japan in 2000. Will the world see mobile revenue growth to almost a trillion dollars in 2017?  Hard to say, but there have been predictions that mobile ad spend will quadruple by 2015.  This next slide shows that in the past 4 years mobile commerce has actually quadrupled:

Picture 8

Granted, desktop ecommerce has also quadrupled, but I predict that that this number will level off and even start to lose out to mobile commerce as technology improves and more and more people become accustomed to carrying out transactions on their phones. This last slide has nothing to do with revenue but is more a reflection of why, when, where, and how people in Japan are connecting to the internet:

Picture 9

In 2006 86% of page views on Japan’s leading social networks were from a desktop.  In just 3 short years this number has plummeted to 26%!  Now, some of these astounding numbers are certainly being driven by the fact that some of Japan’s leading social networks are mobile only, but no matter how you slice it this is nothing short of incredible.  65% of pageviews now take place on a phone.

Conclusion

Let’s say in looking at all these numbers that the world follows Japan only half way.  We’re still looking at a vastly different mobile landscape than exists in the west today.  Nothing short of a revolution in the way we are connecting to and engaging with the internet!
