More Nexus One impressions and review

Happy New Years everyone. The holidays are finally over and we are ready to move forward with Android news. This week is slated to be the biggest yet with Google’s Android press event on January 5 and then loads of new gadgets at CES.
All Nexus One details will be revealed tomorrow, but we have another pair of early impressions posted over the weekend.
First we have Engadget, who got their very own Nexus One a little early. Editor-in-chief, Mr. Topolsky has posted his first impressions, video walkthrough, and a nice gallery of high res pics. Check out the short video below and visit Engadget for the rest of the pics.
The thing that’s struck us most about the Nexus One thus far is the fact that it’s really not very different than the Droid in any substantial way.Joshua TopolskyEngadget
Next up is the overnight site NexusOneBlog, which has posted a short review from someone with early access to the Nexus One. Nothing new is revealed, but it is a nice summary post covering most of the important features of the phone. Head over to their site for images comparing size of the Nexus One to the iPhone.

What were we expecting? Simple — make a phone that’s a better platform than the iphone 3gs.
How? Well there are simple things that every HTC phone gets wrong — fixing those would be a necessity. I’m thinking specifically of the camera lag and ’shutter speed’.
Then there are obvious hardware improvements waiting:
* Rotating camera or two cameras, so the phone can be used as a picture taking device and as a video chat device.
* FM tuner. C’mon — this is obvious.
And then there are the obvious failings of Android phones in general:
* No multi-touch in the browser. Google really needs to be make a full statement of why they aren’t doing that — and then they need to change their minds. Good grief — it makes them look stupid not to have it.
* No storing app content on the sdhc card. This means everything has to fit in the ridiculously tiny onboard memory. Again, this is something that just makes the phone immediately seem stupidly outdated the second you learn about it.
It really seems like no one has even *tried* to make anything nearing the iphone’s capabilities as a platform. It’s like Google and the rest of the manufacturers actually don’t *want* to lead the market by producing phones consumers prefer.
That’s really disappointing.
HAHAHA check out from 4:00 on in the video to see just how similar this new messiah phone is to what we experience on the G1.
I mean, I like the thinness- thats sweet.
But everything else I like is pretty much just Android 2.1+ and we’ll all get that eventually, either on our existing phones or on future (better) hardware.
I was watching him scroll around in Maps, and he’s saying how fast it is, but seriously, my G1 is the same as that.
At least Josh isn’t a dick.
I think it actually loses some 26 thousand pixels with an 800×480 screen. But it is AMOLED, which should help battery life and the vividness of its colors. We’ll see.
Joshua T’s prejudices aside, this still looks like a rough equivalent of the Droid to me. That’s not a bad thing, since all I really want is a Droid that’s slimmed down by the removal of the keyboard (personal preference, I know, but I prefer the slimmer and lighter to all the moving parts just waiting to break or work loose). But despite all the pre-announcement hype, the Nexus looks like the next incremental improvement: a little faster, a little smaller, a little bit nicer OS. (Pending a full review) It’s still the nicest Android device (almost) out there, even if it doesn’t make all the Droid owners kick themselves. Now if only some other carrier would pick it or one of its sure-to-appear HTC clones up, I’d bite.
I agree. Josh is one of the most annoying people to read a review from. No one will ever be good as an iPhone to him.
Next to Jesus Diaz from Gizmodo, Joshua T. is one of the biggest iFanboy there is. Getting a un-biased review from him is going to be tough. I’m happy to see the thing in a clearer video and a shit-ton more pics. I’m sold already and the fact it’s got sheeple like them in a tizzy is just a bonus.
Well what would you expect? Its basically the same hardware as the droid, with no physical keyboard. Same 854×480 screen. Pretty much an equal CPU/GPU. One is snapdragon at 1Ghz but thats no better than the A8 @ 600Mhz. Everything else is pretty much standard. 5.0MP cam, 1400-1500mAH battery. Android 2.1 OS. I hope you werent expecting a big leap forward from the Droid. Right now thats the top of the line in hardware. The iphone 3Gs, Palm Pre, Droid, and now this phone all are the cutting edge best mobile hardware you can buy. The 4th gen iphone is coming out June/July, that will be the next biggest leap forward.
I want to know what it is that everyone was expecting. Eclair is goind to be eclair and you could see from the videos that the os was similar to the droid with speed. they are both great phones. both beat out any other android phone.
Well let’s see.
GSM
T-Mobile 3g Bands
Potential ATT 3G Bands
Slim Keyboardless Design
I think anyone one of those is more than substantially different in that it makes an offering to the market that allows a broader audience of consumers to …. uh consume.
