This year has seen a selection properly jaw-dropping smartphones turn up on shelves, and now it’s time to find the best of the best. Let’s have a look at the main contenders for greatest phone of 2009.
Nokia N900
We begin by acknowledging the most powerful smartphone in Nokia’s catalogue. Their newest smartphone is the first of its kind; it’s the first phone ever to be powered by the new Maemo UI (which was previously to be used only in Nokia’s range of internet tablets). Say hello to the Nokia N900. This Maemo OS gives the Nokia N900 a touch friendly user interface, and as well as that, the phone has an integrated QWERTY keypad, and it has therefore got more methods of interacting with the phone than ever before. It isn’t only about the OS, however, because the Nokia N900 is packed with top-end features. A 5 megapixel camera makes for superb photos, the multimedia playback is stunning, and with HSDPA and GPS, the Nokia N900 certainly isn’t short of connectivity options.
Palm Pre
However, if you’re talking about the phone’s interface, one phone destroys both of the other handsets on this article, without a doubt: the innovative Palm Pre. The reason for this is simple: the Palm Pre is runs on a completely bespoke UI known as WebOS, that is undoubtedly the sleekest, most user-friendly interface that has appeared on any mobile phone. Along with simple gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY interaction with the phone, the Palm Pre also gives you tight sunergy between its various apps. Book a ticket for the movies using one app, and the Palm Pre instantly updates the calendar with the time. Multitask lots of different apps, and be amazed as you watch the Palm Pre scream along without any effort or lag. In the world of interfaces, essentially, the Palm Pre can’t be topped!
HTC HD2
So, there is the Nokia N900 with that Maemo interface, and then we have the Palm Pre, which uses WebOS. And then there’s the HTC HD2; it holds the record for the biggest display ever, on a mobile phone. At a whopping 4.3 inches, it is truly immense, and the WVGA, 800×480 resolution makes it genuinely easy to interact with things like scrollbars and drop-down menus. However, the HTC HD2 actually does a brilliant job of making it so you don’t need to go into the normal Windows menus very much, as sitting atop the operating system, the UI is HTC’s intuitive Sense UI, where everything is achieved by way of various finger swipes and sweeping gestures. It is incredibly simple to use, and it (along with the lightning fast 1GHz Snapdragon CPU) is what makes the HTC HD2 such a pleasure to use. Of course, it’s not all about being raw processing power, a phone has to have decent features and the HTC HD2 has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser), which is why many people see it as the best mobile phone EVER.
