Admob Coming to a Palm Near You

Things are certainly moving along for mobile ad platform Admob. Just last month they were acquired by Google. And now they’ve announced their new open source SDK for the Palm webOS.

The Palm webOS has not seen much development yet. Greg Kumparak over at Mobile Crunch probably correctly attributes this to the corresponding App Catalog still being in beta which has Palm being highly selective over what gets in. Currently there are around 500 apps in the App Catalog.
Palm has a remarkably low market share right now, given what it once was some years ago. I keep wondering how this will play out. Certainly one of the huge draws for development on the Apple OS is the 35 million and counting iPhones in people’s hands. And it’s easy to see why development for Android is humming along, with all the manufacturers utilizing the OS, Android could be in the hands of far more than the iPhone. But with only 1-3% of the mobile phone market (depending on what you look at), it’s hard to see where the pull is going to come from. Maybe Admob knows something we don’t. Either way, it’s a smart move on Admob’s part to deliver mobile ads to as many platforms as possible.
In keeping with the open source aspect of Palm’s webOS (developers can write programs for webOS for free if they make their source freely available), the Admob’s SDK is open source as well. I hate to rain on the parade, but where is the money going to come from for Palm? Sure, Admob makes money delivering the ads, again, they have every incentive to get on as many platforms as possible, but I just don’t see the game plan for Palm. We’ll see I guess.
