HTC Eris Launches on Verizon

Verizon is launching a new Android based phone tomorrow called the Eris.  Made by HTC and patterned after it’s very successful Hero, the Eris utilizes HTC’s adaptation of Android that it calls “Sense”.  Here are the specs:

• 3.2 inch capacitive touch screen and trackball interface
• 5.0 megapixel auto focus camera
• Expandable memory with pre-installed 8 GB microSD(TM) card (up to 16 GB supported)
• Supports USB mass storage
• Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi and 3.5 mm headset connectivity
• Integrated GPS and a digital compass with a sensor that enables the phone to know what direction it is facing
• Smart dialer for simplified dialing by name, number or initials
• Full HTML browser with Flash Lite capabilities
• Seamless compatibility with Google(TM) services like Google Maps(TM), Gmail(TM), Google Search(TM) and more

Pretty cool looking.  One interesting drawback is that it will be running V1.6 of Android, not the newest version 2.0.  This is apparently due to some problems HTC’s Sense UI was having with 2.0.  This certainly points to the obvious drawback that Android development will have in general, the endlessly adaptable OS will sometimes be adapted by manufacturers into not working with later releases.  Mobile Crunch’s John Biggs certainly seems to thing this is only the beginning.

I have to agree with him that we are going to see a dramatic fragmentation of the OS and all the subsequent bugs and issues that go along with that, very much like we’ve seen in the Windows desktop world.  I still don’t think this fact will slow the uptake of Android.  And as I thought more on why Google created this open source OS in the first place, I see now that regardless of who is using Android to whatever ends, I believe they are going to be sitting on top of the biggest app store economy in the world.  It will make Apple’s App Store look like peanuts.  So what they may be “losing” in hardware revenue, they will certainly be gaining in ubiquity and volume of sales as almost every manufacturer in the world makes phones with their OS.
