Android 1.6 SDK Released

Google has released the Adroid 1.6 SDK!  We’re going to go through some of the great additions and refinements that are part of 1.6, also known as ‘Donut’ (aptly keeping within their pastry theme).

Of particular note is the addition of support for CDMA networks, allowing Android to be utilized by phones on an even broader array of carriers such as Verizon, Sprint and Virgin Mobile.  This is a rather important move, and certainly will accelerate Android’s propagation.

Next up is support for a wider range of screen resolutions.   Now supporting screens up to 800×480 pixels,  this will allow even more phone manufacturers to get in the game. Not to mention the new and novel ways app developers can create with a broader pallet.

1.6 adds predictive searching that thankfully keeps you from having to always type out your full search terms.  And the new “Quick Search” tool allows you to look through contacts, history and bookmarks quickly and easily.

Android 1.6 also has improved camera usage, up to 39% better locally, and a cool new battery monitor.  The monitor tells you which apps are drawing power.  This addresses one of the chief complaints against Android phones.  With so many processes running in the background it was terribly difficult to nail down the power sucking culprits and improve battery life.

And lastly there have been some nice additions and changes to the Android Marketplace.  As you can see they’ve done away with the flat blacks and grays and are allowing app descriptions to include a screen shot, certain to make developers happy.

All in all quite a nice update to Android.  Speculation has it that 1.6 will debut on several devices this October.  That would be the Motorola Cliq and perhaps Sprint’s Hero.
