iPhone Developer Finds Success in Lite/Free App By Hans Erickson in Case Study, Mobile Development

The creator of the iPhone application iCombat has reported getting conversion rates far greater than the norm.  In his post titled Just How Much Does a Lite Version Boost App Sales he reports global conversion rates of almost 9%, or 7% after being adjusted to account for downloads not driven by the lite version.  Here is a chart of his findings:

Picture 2

This is much higher than what many application developers find upon releasing a lite version.  More typical is something in the range of .5% to about 5% as is detailed here and here.  Unfortunately there is no clearly presented reason for these higher success numbers.  We’re left to wonder.  However, he does have some nice takeaways for other app developers:

1. Should have released lite version from the beginning – There was no point to waiting and sacrificing the initial new release buzz.  Since it is harder to get featured once your app is launched, say for app updates, it is important to strike early and hard with your app release.

2. Lite does NOT cannibalize sales – If your app is a gimmick then it might not make sense but in all other cases it only helps to increase sales (see our previous post on this topic)

3. Get the bugs out for your lite release – users churn lite apps and are fine giving you 1 star if they don’t like the experience.  This is especially bad because the App store prompts users to rate an app when they try to delete it

4. Lite sales trail off too but paid sales remain higher – if you don’t have the x-factor that is needed to spread the word your lite downloads will fall as they have for iCombat, but in our case paid sales have continued to sell at a minimum rate several times higher than the pre-lite period

5. Frequent releases do juice downloadsPocket God and other frequently updated apps have benefited from a weekly sales bump as they show up in the new releases section of the app store (users also like this episode style model)

Some News from Android Market By admin in Mobile Development

I’m pleased to let you know about several updates to Android Market. First, we will soon introduce new features in Android Market for Android 1.6 that will improve the overall experience for users. As part of this change, developers will be able to provide screenshots, promotional icons and descriptions that will better show off applications and games.

We have also added four new sub-categories for applications: sports, health, themes, and comics. Developers can now choose these sub-categories for both new and existing applications via the publisher website. Finally, we have added seller support for developers in Italy. Italian developers can go to the publisher website to upload applications and target any of the countries where paid applications are currently available to users.

To take advantage of the upcoming Android Market refresh, we encourage you to visit the Android Market publisher website and upload additional marketing assets. Check out the video below for some of the highlights.

Android 1.6 SDK is here By admin in Mobile Development

I am happy to let you know that Android 1.6 SDK is available for download. Android 1.6, which is based on the donut branch from the Android Open Source Project, introduces a number of new features and technologies. With support for CDMA and additional screen sizes, your apps can be deployed on even more mobile networks and devices. You will have access to new technologies, including framework-level support for additional screen resolutions, like QVGA and WVGA, new telephony APIs to support CDMA, gesture APIs, a text-to-speech engine, and the ability to integrate with Quick Search Box. What’s new in Android 1.6 provides a more complete overview of this platform update.

The Android 1.6 SDK requires a new version of Android Development Tools (ADT). The SDK also includes a new tool that enables you to download updates and additional components, such as new add-ons or platforms.

You can expect to see devices running Android 1.6 as early as October. As with previous platform updates, applications written for older versions of Android will continue to run on devices with Android 1.6. Please test your existing apps on the Android 1.6 SDK to make sure they run as expected.

Over the next several weeks, we will publish a series of blog posts to help you get ready for the new developer technologies in Android 1.6. The following topics, and more, will be covered: how to adapt your applications to support different screen sizes, integrating with Quick Search Box, building gestures into your apps, and using the text-to-speech engine.

If you are interested to see some highlights of Android 1.6, check out the video below.

Happy coding!

Now available: Android 1.6 NDK By admin in Mobile Development

Today Android 1.6 NDK, release 1 is available for download from the Android developer site.

To recap, the NDK is a companion to the SDK that provides tools to generate and embed native ARM machine code within your application packages. This native code has the same restrictions as the VM code, but can execute certain operations much more rapidly. This is useful if you’re doing heavy computations, digital processing, or even porting existing code bases written in C or C++.

If you already use the Android 1.5 NDK, upgrading to this release is highly recommended. It provides the following improvements:

  • The ability to use OpenGL ES 1.1 headers and libraries
If your application targets Android 1.6, your native code can now directly call OpenGL ES 1.1 functions to perform graphics rendering. This will help those programs that need to send large amounts of vertex data to the GPU. Note, however, that activity lifecycle and surface creation must still be performed from the VM. This NDK contains a new sample (“san-angeles”) that shows exactly how to do that with a GLSurfaceView object.
  • The ability to target either Android 1.5 or 1.6 devices
The NDK parses your project’s properties to know which platform release it is targeting. It will then automatically use the proper headers and libraries to generate your native code. Any application that targets 1.5 will run on Android 1.5, Android 1.6 and any future official system release. Targeting 1.6 should, thus, only be done if your application requires new 1.6 features / APIs, like the ability to call OpenGL ES 1.x headers from native code.
  • The ability to put your native sources under your application’s project tree
You can now conveniently place all your sources (C, C++ and Java) under the same tree, for editing or version control purposes.
  • Many fixes to the NDK’s build scripts
The changes to the build scripts fix some annoying bugs and also increase host system compatibility.

If you have any questions, please join us in the Android NDK forum.

Blackberry Bold Review – Oasis of the Business Smartphone By admin in Mobile Development News

For many years the Blackberry had been the only smartphone on the market, and no one really used it for personal use. With so many manufacturers introducing their own smartphone, it was become more common for individuals to own a smartphone, and lately more specifically a Blackberry. Once RIM began to offer smaller versions as in the Pearl and the Curve, interest in the Blackberry grew. The introduction of the Blackberry Bold is changing that even more as there are so many features going into this model that have never been on any Blackberry phone in the past.

For the business sector, the changes to the Blackberry Bold are not that critical. Most of the “firsts” that RIM has added to the Blackberry Bold are primarily ones that would be used for personal use. The upgrade to the support for Microsoft Office is definitely a first and something that will be a great advantage to business users. With Documents on the Go it is possible to view Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents almost exactly as they would appear on a desktop. There are also upgrades to email capabilities that allow the user to read longer emails on the display screen, thus improving the communication between user and personal or business contacts.

Blackberry Bold is larger than its predecessors yet it is still lightweight enough not to create a problem. In spite of the smartphones that are being developed by other manufacturers, many businesses are still more content with Blackberry because of its longstanding use in the business world. The use of Blackberry in business is certainly one we can see when you hear it mentioned in novels that involve employees who travel for business. Though there are other smartphones today, one does not hear about them except in advertisements.

One reason commercial customers tend to stay with Blackberry is its long-standing record of reliability. Though personal users may be willing to try something new, businesses are less likely to do so. They are very stuck in their ways and not likely to change anytime soon. Take the two-way for example-other carriers now have this mode in place, but most business users still use Nextel because up until a few years ago it was the only carrier that had two-way capabilities. Commercial customers tend to be very loyal to their product line and are less likely to change than anyone else.

Blackberry Bold has not yet made a full entry into the mobile phone market, so you will have to look for a Blackberry Bold review from those areas where it has already made its mark. We should soon begin seeing mobile phone deals and thus have more information on the Blackberry Bold and its full line of features and how they work. In the meantime you can still rely on your faith in the Blackberry’s quality to make any decisions regarding the purchase of a Blackberry Bold until more concrete information is available by the end of the year.

The Blackberry Storm 9500 – the Most Innovative Email Mobile Phone Ever Made? By admin in Mobile Development News

It’s now available to buy, so let’s take a look at the fabulous new Blackberry Storm, and ask the question: is it really the best email-centric mobile phone ever made?

Fruit-based fact-file – the history of Blackberry mobile phones

Blackberry mobile phones have been available for many years, now, and right from the very start of their of their existence, they’ve been known for one feature above all others: email. The name Blackberry has become synonymous for instant email, wherever you are, right from the early days of their little, monochrome-screened devices that weren’t actually very good as mobile phones, and weren’t actually that appealing. However, since then, it’s fair to say that Blackberrys have taken off in a big, big way. It’s also fair to say they’ve evolved from pure email devices into proper, full-blooded smartphones. Their portfolio’s now filled with top-end mobile phones like the Blackberry Bold, the Blackberry Pearl…

…and the phone we’re here to look at today: the most advanced Blackberry ever made, the stunning Blackberry Storm.

Blackberry Storm – a touch of genius

There’s one glaringly obvious thing about the Blackberry Storm, and that’s the complete lack of a physical keyboard. That should give the game away, that the Blackberry Storm has a touchscreen; in fact, it’s the first of the wealth of mobile phones to come from Blackberry to ever have a touchscreen. Ah, but, it doesn’t just stop at the touchscreen, because it’s a special one. You see, the Blackberry Storm has a screen that can be pressed down into the body of the mobile phone, with a satisfying clicky action. In essence, it’s designed to feel like you’re pressing a real, physical button, and believe me, when you’re typing out an email using the virtual keyboard on the Blackberry Storm, that kind of physical motion and click is absolutely invaluable. No other touchscreen mobile phones can touch (pun ever so slightly intended) the Blackberry Storm, when it comes to tactile feedback.

The Perfect Storm?

The question, though, is whether the Blackberry Storm is the perfect email device, and whether it can be the perfect smartphone. It certainly has a massive list of features, beginning with the touchscreen, and taking in such varied things as a 3 megapixel camera, and superb video playback, meaning you have your very own pocket entertainment system, with the Blackberry Storm. And, of course, with HSDPA internet access and WiFi, as well as a massive screen, the Blackberry Storm (or Blackberry Storm 9500, to give it its full name) really is one of the better internet mobile phones out there. So for email and internet access, as well as for entertainment, it really is brilliant. But… there are a couple of flaws, and things to consider. First, the software interface on the Blackberry Storm has some, well, let’s call them idiosyncrasies, and it can be a bit finicky at times. Also, your may find it disconcerting have a screen that moves. It’s a brilliant, brilliant feature, and it will benefit you no end, but the first time you feel it moving and wiggling, the screen on the Blackberry Storm IS going to freak you out. If you can get past its relatively minor flaws, though, you’ll that the Blackberry Storm is one heck of a good mobile phones, and one that I really can’t recommend enough!

Find Out How To Get A Droid Phone For Free By admin in Mobile Development News

Find Out How To Get A Free Droid Phone

Goodness — can you feel it? Android exitement  sure is in the air these days. And the anticipation seems to be growing by the minute

Adding to the excitement now is Verizon’s mystifying proclamation of its forthcoming Droid smartphone. The phone, thought to be a Motorola device formerly codenamed Sholes, was revealed via a enlivened TV ad and accompanying teaser web site set in motion this weekend. The promotional tactics are clearly taking shots at the iPhone, using  phrases like “iDon’t” to point out all the things that the i phone can’t do that the Droid can.

>>>Find out how to get a free droid phone<<<

What you need to know

* The phone is only .5” thick.
* It weighs a little over 4 oz., but still feels solid.
* It has a 3.2” touch screen with touch-sensitive buttons and a trackball.
* Android has gotten really good at auto-complete, so it works about as well as the iPhone.
* There’s haptic feedback while typing.
* My only gripe is the slow accelerometer when turning it sideways.
* Other than that, we don’t mind not having a physical keyboard.

* It isn’t running the latest version of Android like the Motorola Droid and the touch screen isn’t as big, but it’s accurate and easy to use just like we’d expect from an Android HTC phone* There’s even multi-touch, which the Motorola Droid doesn’t have.
* The interface is quick and customizable with the HTC Sense feature; lots of home screens, widgets, and shortcuts.
* On the whole, it’s not as fast as the Motorola Droid, but it’s still great.
* The browser is solid; it supports Flash Lite and multi-touch, but you still might have a few problems with more intense sites.
* The 5 megapixel camera is a little shortcoming; there’s no flash and picture quality is average.
* You can record video too.
* The Android market is growing fast and it’s second only to the iPhone app store in content and ease of use.
* It has a Micro SD slot.
* The droid phone also has Wi-Fi.

For a limited time, you have the chance to get a  droid phone for free
